NCHR to Offer Leadership and Organizing Skills Training

The National Coalition for Haitian Rights (NCHR), will be providing leadership training to Haitians and Haitian-Americans wishing to build strong, dynamic and active associations or community-based organizations in Haitian communities. The first of these monthly classes is scheduled for the week of February 24, 1997. "We have seen too many community organizations, even some of the most promising, fail after just a few years of operation," says Jocelyn McCalla, NCHR's Executive Director. "It's time that we help turn things around by communicating our knowledge and expertise to the new generation of Haitian-Americans who are now getting involved in community affairs."

NCHR plans to offer the training gratis to those who apply and qualify. Over the course of two days and in a small group setting (no more than 15), participants will first be treated to a review of organizing efforts in Haitian communities in the 70s, 80s, & 90s, the context in which these efforts were launched and a discussion of effective and ineffective approaches. Afterwards, they will be taught the basics of building and sustaining a successful organization.

"We realize that this seminar also provides Haitians or people of Haitian descent an excellent opportunity to get to know each other and to learn of the many initiatives that exist within the community," says Netlyn Bernard Samedy, coordinator of the program. "We plan to allow plenty of time for discussions and networking."

"This is a first for NCHR," adds Jocelyn McCalla, "we will be also learning as we implement this program. I am sure that some things will change along the way. However, our belief in this program is strong, and it underscores the commitment of our Board to Haitian community empowerment."
